New england teacup pig
I did not expect Bella, our white Micro Mini pig to have her babies quite yet - I was thinking another 2 weeks. Well, either I counted wrong or Bella simply did not want to wait any longer! She had been more quiet yesterday and when she did not want to eat her food (!) it was clear that she was not feeling well. She just laid on her side and looked very pitiful. She is a very sweet girl and let me pet and massage her a bit. At 9 :30 pm the first baby came out, followed by another and another and another, all about 20 minutes apart. I cleaned them up - it is amazing how active these little piglets are after just being born! They all started nursing right away, which made the veterinarian in me happy because it is very important for the piglets to get the first milk ( also called colostrum) for it is chock full with nutrients and antibodies to help piglets stay healthy. At midnight we had 6 babies and I was statring to worry- would this be too much for Bella ? She looked so exhausted . Well, out came one more ! This time a little black and white boy. After that Bella rested and drank a little water and I left them all snuggled together in a heap of hay nto get some sleep myself. Bella is a wonderful mother!
